Chocolate Chunk Scones

Chocolate Chunk Scones are an addition to our morning routine and to be honest sometimes they are our afternoon snack as well.  The perfect combination of slightly sweet, buttery and tender these scones are full of semisweet chocolate chunks and the zest of an orange.   

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Light Brown Sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 Orange, Zest
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter, Cold
  • 1/2 Cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup Chocolate Chunks

Topping

  • Heavy Cream
  • Sugar Crystals

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare a sheet pan with parchment paper
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, orange zest, salt
  3. Mix together with a paddle attachment on low speed
  4. Cut the cold butter into 1" cubes and slowly put one piece at a time into the mixing bowl
  5. Continue to mix until the butter is incorporated and the flour mixture looks like a course crumb texture
  6. Mix together the egg, heavy cream and vanilla extract; whisk until combined
  7. Add the heavy cream mixture to the dry ingredients
  8. Add in chocolate chunks and mix just until incorporated
  9. Remove the dough from the mixing bowl and shape into a ball
  10. Press the ball out into a circle until the dough is about 1" thick
  11. Cut the scone dough into 6 equal triangles and slightly seperate
  12. Brush each scone with heavy cream and sprinkle with course sugar crystals
  13. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden
