Chocolate Chunk Scones are an addition to our morning routine and to be honest sometimes they are our afternoon snack as well.  The perfect combination of slightly sweet, buttery and tender these scones are full of semisweet chocolate chunks and the zest of an orange.   As a whole, our family loves breakfast pastries.  We have all kind of found the one thing we love, but we all agree on a really good scone.  Almost every time you walk into a coffee shop there is a scone option, we have had blueberry,  vanilla bean, lemon, cranberry, and so many other flavors but who doesn't love Chocolate Chunk Scones.  On top of the flavor, the next most important part of the scone is the texture.  Buttery, tender, not to sweet and a little crunch on the top is all the characteristics of the perfect scone and why not add chocolate chunks and orange zest to tie it all together.  The citrus and semi sweet chocolate is the perfect pairing for this scone, but don't be afraid to try out other flavor combinations.   When you are making Chocolate Chunk Scones, first all the dry ingredients will be combined in your mixing bowl.  Before adding your butter to the dry ingredients, the most important thing to remember is that your butter is cold...extra cold, could even be frozen.  Incorporating extra cold butter will guarantee a flakey and tender scone.  Once you have combined all your ingredients and sprinkled in your chocolate chunks, make sure you do not over mix your scone dough.  Over mixing the dough will cause these tender scones to be tough and dry...so don't do it.  I like shaping my dough into a circle and cutting the sections into triangles, but you can make your scone into any shape that you would like.  And to finish your new favorite Chocolate Chunk Scones, brush the top of the dough with heavy cream and sprinkle with sugar crystals to give them that beautiful golden color and extra crunch.  Without a doubt, you will have to remake these over and over again for your morning breakfast routine,  brunch or just to have as an afternoon snack.
